Swiss naturalisation: 10 years and then what
Requirements, exams, integration, costs and timing of ordinary naturalisation in Ticino. A long road, not an automatism.
The federal prerequisite
Ten years of effective residence in Switzerland (years between 8 and 18 count double), C permit, proven integration, no pending charges, economic independence. Only after these 10 years can you begin the procedure.
Three levels
Swiss naturalisation is simultaneously federal, cantonal and municipal. Each level has its own checks. The municipality may require an interview on local life, Swiss history, Ticino geography, cantonal institutions.
Forfait and naturalisation
Being on the forfait does not preclude naturalisation, but the municipal procedure assesses effective integration: Italian knowledge (B1 oral, A2 written in Ticino), participation in local life, economic independence. A profile of pure forfait isolated in a villa with zero contacts risks rejection.
Real timing
From formal filing to decision: 18-36 months in most Luganese municipalities, with significant variance between city and valley communes.
Dual citizenship
Switzerland accepts dual citizenship. Whether you can keep your original passport depends on your home country, not Switzerland: check your country's rules before starting the procedure.
